It's A Boy! Masai Giraffe Born At LA Zoo

LOS ANGELES (CBS/AP) — The Los Angeles Zoo has a big new baby.

The zoo announced Wednesday that a male Masai giraffe was born on Oct. 9.

The unnamed 130-pound baby stands just under 6 feet tall and is the firstborn of 4-year-old mother Zainabu.

"Zainabu is doing a great job as a first time mother," Mike Bona, animal keeper at the Los Angeles Zoo, said in a statement. "The baby was born at night, and Zainabu didn't need any assistance from Animal Care Staff."

Bona says people should come to see the calf while he's still young because he could be nearly 10 feet tall by his first birthday.

Masai giraffes can grow to 17 feet and weigh 2,700 pounds. The species comes from southern Kenya and northern Tanzania and is the largest of all giraffes.
