Police Warn Venice Residents To Keep Doors Locked After Report Of Prowler

VENICE (CBSLA.com) – Police warned Venice residents Monday to lock their windows and doors after a prowler entered a woman's bedroom and stood over her bed with what appeared to be a knife, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The intruder broke in through an unlocked window at a studio apartment at 28th Street and Speedway about 3:10 a.m. Monday.

"They had a short conversation, and he went into the kitchen, which allowed her to run outside and to a neighbor's apartment to call police,'' said Lt. Joseph Sanchez.

By the time police arrived, the prowler was nowhere to be found.

The victim was not hurt. Police said it appears nothing was stolen.

Police said this is a good reminder to keep windows and doors locked. They have been trying to spread the message and said people have been listening. Last week, burglaries in the area were down, according to the LAPD.

But with the heat wave, one Venice resident said she has no choice but to leave her windows open to let in the cool breeze.

"It has been so hot that we do leave our doors open, and that's scary," she said.

But another local woman said she is not taking any chances.

"I think I will definitely close my windows tonight," she said.
