Dozens Suffer Heat-Related Illnesses At Placentia Heritage Festival

PLACENTIA (CBSLA.com) — Sixty people suffered heat-related illnesses during the Placentia Heritage Festival on Saturday, authorities said.

With temperatures hovering around 100 degrees, medics began treating people at the scene, around the 2100 block of Kraemer Boulevard, around 12 p.m.

The parade is an annual Placentia tradition, taking place every October since the 1970s  to celebrate and support the local community.

Saturday's parade drew hundreds of people. Of the 60 reported illnesses, 20 were taken to the hospital.

The injured range from children to senior citizens, according to the Orange County Fire Authority. The victims included members of high
school marching bands who were wearing heavy uniforms.

About 10 ambulances from various departments including Orange County Fire Authority, Fullerton Fire, Brea Fire and Anaheim Fire assisted with transporting the victims.

Authorities shut the parade down at 11:30 a.m. due to the large number of people who fell ill.
