Facebook Users Can Now Post 7-Second Looping Video As Profile Pic

(CBSLA.com) — Facebook is rolling out a new feature that's sure to grab your attention.

The social media site allowed some users Wednesday to start making their profile pic a seven-second video that loops, better known as a gif.

Their profile picture can also be scheduled to appear temporarily. This makes it even easier, for example, to have a #tbt pic come down automatically at Thursday's close.

TechCrunch.com is calling it the latest move in the arms race of social media graphics.

Social media networks keep one-upping their graphics to make the user experience more visually stimulating and fun. Twitter adopted auto-play videos à la Instagram. And Snapchat first enabled profile gifs and animated selfie lenses.

In addition to Facebook's profile pic options, users will notice a prompt to write a 100-character bio that will appear below their profile pic. Privacy controls can be modified so this info isn't necessarily public.

They also can select five photos that will pin to a section at the top of their profile. Facebook says this will give people a better sense of who you are and what's important to you, which could come in handy when they're thinking about answering your friend request.

Facebook is also becoming more mobile friendly, launching a new design that switches out the left-centered profile pic for a larger one that appears in the center of the screen. It's a welcome change to the user experience for the millions of users accessing Facebook on mobile devices.
