LA Mayor Touts Plans For New Cell Phone Towers To Function During Quake
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Local officials and scientists gathered Wednesday for a summit aimed at preparing for the next big earthquake in Southern California.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Dr. Lucy Jones of the U.S. Geological Survey were among the featured presenters at the 2015 Great California ShakeOut Breakfast Leadership Summit near Dodger Stadium.
The summit was scheduled to feature presenters on a host of safety topics, including how to retrofit a house or building to more quake-resistant, fire suppression efforts and bystander CPR demonstrations, and an introduction to "Temblor", a new app for calculating cost of earthquake damage to your home.
Garcetti told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO officials are working on implementing new cell phone towers that could help ensure your phone works throughout the disaster and recovery.
"I think we could have them last the entire time, even in a big quake, if in the next two years we're able to build out the plans that we have," said Garcetti. "Still, you shouldn't depend on it, you should have a plan."
Because it may be at least another two years before those cell towers are built, one of the keys to any quake preparedness plan should be having a rally point where family members can meet, Garcetti said.
