Disneyland To Close Several Attractions While Building New 'Star Wars' Land

ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) — Weeks after Disneyland announced it would be adding a 14-acre "Star Wars" land, employees say the park's railroad and several attractions along the Rivers of America will close temporarily to make room for construction.

Beginning Jan. 11, the Disneyland Railroad, the nightly Fantasmic! show, the Mark Twain Riverboat, the Sailing Ship Colombia, the Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes and Pirate's Lair on Tom Sawyer's Island will close for a year, Disneyland officials said on their Disney Parks blog.

Closing permanently is Big Thunder Ranch, which features a restaurant, Jamboree stage and petting zoo. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West rented out the Jamboree area in June to celebrate their daughter North's second birthday.

Cast members in those areas will be offered other positions during the closures.

Construction on the "Star Wars" land is slated to begin in 2016.

But fans don't need to wait light years to step into a "galaxy far, far away." Beginning Nove. 16, Disneyland is rolling out "Star Wars" exhibits, including a Launch Bay where guests can choose to join the dark side or the light side - we hope you'll choose the latter. There will also be a Jedi training temple, a game center, and galleries featuring "Star Wars" paraphernalia.

More information is available at the Disney Parks blog.
