UC Irvine Celebrates First 50 Years With 52-Page Magazine

IRVINE (CBSLA.com) — When the University of California, Irvine opened its doors in 1965, the school was tiny compared to other schools in the UC system. Its first graduating class had only 14 students.

Fifty years later, the university holds its own on the global stage.

UC Irvine is now home to more than 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students, as well as 9,400 staff members and 1,100 faculty.  The school has evolved into a world-renowned research institution, with three researchers receiving the Nobel Prize. The school is also Orange County's second-largest employer, trailing only Disneyland.

To tell that story, UCI is issuing UCI@50, a 52-page glossy magazine documenting the history, expansion, innovations, partnerships and people who have shaped UCI from a modest addition to the UC system to a vibrant, world-class institution.

The magazine is published in partnership with Freedom Custom Content, a business unit of Freedom Communications, parent company to the Orange County Register.

"The UCI@50 magazine illustrates the pioneering spirit and strong culture of entrepreneurism that exists on our campus," said UCI Chancellor Howard Gillman. "UCI's future is inextricably linked to how the region's quality of life, particularly in the areas of research, education and service to community."

About 1.1 million copies of the UCI@50 magazine are being distributed across Orange County. Check out an online version here: http://bit.ly/1KpWNys
