Nightly Construction Of Upper Level Roadways To Begin At LAX

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Passengers were advised to prepare for traffic delays as nightly upper level roadway construction begins at Los Angeles International Airport.

The work was supposed to get underway Monday night, but has been delayed for at least another day due to a threat of rain.

Airport officials say the second phase of the $32.4 million second level roadway repair project will add a new layer of polyester concrete, which is relatively impervious to water, to give the roadway an additional 30 years of life.

"It needs to be completely overlaid with some new concrete," Mary Grady, an LAX spokesperson, said.

Officials explained the 31-year-old roadway currently exposes motorists to surface cracks, spalling, deteriorating concrete and shallow reinforcing steel within the central terminal area.

The project will include a six step process to make repairs to the roadway.

Contractors are scheduled to work from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Monday through Thursday nights. They will begin work at 11 p.m. and end at 1 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Roadway repairs will occur five to six nights per week, weather permitting.

During the nightly construction, passengers may be dropped off on the arrivals level as an alternative to avoid traffic delays.

Authorities explained the upper level roadway will not completely close during construction, and passengers will have access to the terminals.

Vehicle lanes, however, will be periodically restricted.

According to airport police, the second phase of the roadway rehabilitation work is scheduled to be finished before Thanksgiving. For more information, click here.
