LA Communities Commemorate 9/11 Anniversary With Memorials, Ceremonies
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — City officials, first-responders and residents gathered across the Southland on Friday to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck and Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas participated in an annual remembrance ceremony, held at the Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center in Elysian Park.
There, a piece of metal from the World Trade Center is on display.
In Santa Clarita, members of the Young Americans for Freedom Chapter placed 2,977 American flags at the Trinity Classical Academy in remembrance of those who died in the terror strikes.
At 8:30 a.m., city officials joined local veterans from American Legion Post 397 at City Hall in Monterey Park for Patriots Day observance.
Meanwhile, in Duarte, authorities, county sheriff and fire department representatives held an "Honor Among Ashes" themed remembrance ceremony. Students from a local school performed at the memorial.
Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Krekorian partnered with the Midtown North Hollywood Neighborhood Council and the L.A. Beautification Team to hold a ceremony at North Hollywood Park South.
At 5:30 p.m., a wreath-laying, bell-ringing ceremony will be held at the Sept. 11 memorial garden in Beverly Hills. The Beverly Hills Police Department Color Guard will also perform at the tribute.
Later this evening, Terrazas will also take part in a ceremony held at Los Angeles Fire Department Station 88, which is home to the Sherman Oaks search-and-rescue team that deployed to New York following the attacks.
Today's remembrance marks the 14th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that left nearly 3,000 people dead in New York City.
