Dogs Bitten By Rattlesnake In San Bernardino
SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — When Shelly Burnett and her grandkids heard her dogs frantically barking in the yard, they knew something wasn't right.
Her two dogs, Ginger and Dale, had both been bitten by a rattlesnake in Burnett's back yard.
Burnett lives in what she calls "rattlesnake alley" in the 3600 block of White Ash Road in Lytle Creek.
When Burnett and her grandkids went outside to see what the commotion was, they found the dogs barking at a rattlesnake.
"I ran and got a trash can and scooped the snake up, but before I could, Dale got bit right in the nose," Burnett said.
Both dogs were bitten by the snake and taken to the vet as soon as possible.
A vial of rattlesnake antivenom costs about $600.
"I had to do it. I mean, they're my babies," said Burnett.
Luckily, only Dale needed the antivenom, as Ginger's bite was not as severe.
Burnett's veterinarian told us that there is a rattlesnake immunization shot available for dogs that costs just $25.
It is best given yearly during rattlesnake season, which is occurring now through October.
Both dogs spent the night at the Loma Linda Animal Hospital but are expected to be OK.
The rattlesnake was picked up by animal control.
The owners of the dogs has created a GofundMe page to raise money for the dog's medication.
