Heat Wave Has Some Southland Schools Cancel Outdoor PE

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — Tuesday's triple-digit temperatures prompted a number of schools in the Inland Empire to cancel football practice and other outdoor physical activities.

With the blazing hot sun searing the Inland Empire, parents picking up their kids from school had some common concerns.

"Don't want her passing out. Don't want her dehydrated," said Andrea Bailey, whose daughter goes to Arrowhead Elementary School in San Bernardino. "I tell her to make sure she drinks water. Drink lots of water," she said.

At Arrowhead Elementary, air conditioners were running full blast all day. School districts in the area sent out memos to staff reminding them that indoor recesses and lunches were options.

"I'm pretty comfortable that they are going to keep them hydrated. I don't think they are going to let them run around and, you know, for them just be all dehydrated," said parent Gladis Samu.

The same was true in Moreno Valley, where the school district sent out an email reminding teachers to let students stay inside for physical education and lunch.
