2nd Driver Surrenders In Connection With Deadly Rancho Cucamonga Street Racing Crash

RANCHO CUCAMONGA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say the second driver involved in a deadly street race in Rancho Cucamonga has turned himself in to police.

Jimmy Awolesi, 22, a Fontana resident, surrendered Saturday at the West Valley Detention Center, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Photographic evidence indicated Awolesi was indeed the driver of one of the two black Ford Mustangs seen racing southbound Wednesday afternoon on Rochester Avenue from Arrow Route, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deputy Nick Clark said.

One of the Mustangs rammed into a Nissan Altima around 4:15 p.m. as he was heading east on Jersey Boulevard at Rochester, sending both cars careening onto the sidewalk.

The driver of the Altima was taken to a hospital, where he died. He was identified as Julio Lopez, a 46-year-old father of two and Pomona resident.

The 16-year-old driver of the Mustang which caused the crash was arrested Thursday, CBS2/KCAL9's Tom Wait reported. Three people were believed to be in the suspect's vehicle, including one passenger who may have been recording the race, according to investigators.

Police had been calling on the public to help them find the driver of the second Mustang, which fled from the scene after the first Mustang got in the deadly crash.
