'Honey Oil' Lab Found Inside Hacienda Heights Home

HACIENDA HEIGHTS (CBSLA.com) — A marijuana extraction lab was discovered inside a home in a quiet neighborhood of Hacienda Heights, authorities said Friday.

Narcotics detectives conducting an investigation in the 16800 block of Twin Hill Drive entered the home Wednesday at about 4 p.m. and discovered what they say is a "honey oil" marijuana extraction lab, about 25 pounds of marijuana, worth $12,500, and 100 grams of concentrated cannabis worth about $6,000.

One person – whose name, gender and age was withheld -- was detained on suspicion of manufacturing a controlled substance.

Authorities say the manufacture of honey oil involves using explosive gasses to cheaply extract highly concentrated THC from marijuana.

"The solvents they're using, butane and also ethyl alcohol, are extremely flammable. The butane will explode with even static electricity," sheriff's Detective Scott Schulze said in a statement.

The investigation into the operation is ongoing.
