Brush Fire In Castaic Reportedly Claims 6 Structures, 500 Acres

SAUGUS (CBSLA.com)  —  A brush fire in Castaic has engulfed six structures as the flames continue to grow.

The fire, named the "Warm Fire", has burned about 500 acres.

The structures were abandoned -- part of the Warm Springs Rehabilitation Center, according to authorities.

Firefighters said the nearest homes were "far" from the flames but they were still actively working to keep the abandoned properties from alighting.

"There are at least 12-15 structures in the area," said Robert Garcia, fire chief with the US Forest Service, "we're actively engaged in structure defense."

LA County Fire units are assisting in battling the blaze, which was reported just after 3:30 p.m. near Lake Hughes Road and Warm Springs.

No injuries have been reported.

No cause of the fire was given but officials believe the fire was suspicious in nature.

Temperatures remained in the triple-digits as firefighters continued to fight the blaze.

Winds also began gusting up around 6:15 p.m., making conditions more dangerous for firefighters.

Sunday evening it was reported that authorities were questioning two "suspicious" people.

As of 9:30 p.m., officials said the fire was zero percent contained and moving quickly.

KCAL9's Cristy Fajardo said by nightfall the smell of smoke in the air had largely dissipated. Cooler temperatures were also aiding firefighters in their efforts.

She also said she could not see a wall of flames in the ridge behind where she was stationed, a hopeful sign that firefighters were getting the upper hand.

Fajardo also said there were many conflicting reports to as just how many structures were burned or destroyed. Reports varied from three to six, with most believing the number was closer to or six.

As of 10:30 p.m. Sunday, officials said the two "suspicious" people being questioned had no connection to the fire.
