Deputy Hikes Several Miles To Help Talk Stranded Boy Off Ledge

SANTA CLARITA (CBSLA.com) — A sheriff's deputy hiked several miles to rescue an 11-year-old boy who was stranded on a ledge about eight feet above the Haskell Canyon Trail, authorities said Thursday.

The boy was hiking in the area with his mother and his friend when the boy became stranded, and his mother called the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station for help at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"She was getting concerned about her son not being able to come down from the ledge," Deputy Shirley Miller said. Deputies from the station went to the trail and also summoned a Search and Rescue team, she said.

"As darkness set in, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station Deputy Adam Lagabed hiked up the trail to try to locate the missing parties," Miller said.

"After finding them, he was able to coax the 11-year-old boy to slide down the ledge, telling him that he would catch him," Miller said. "The boy complied with his request, and slid down the ledge, suffering no injuries."

Shortly after the boy came down from the ledge, the Search and Rescue Team arrived at the scene and everyone was escorted to safety, Miller said.
