KOREATOWN (CBSLA.com) — Police say a 16-year-old boy has surrendered in connection to an attempted kidnapping at knifepoint.

The Los Angeles Police Department say the suspect tried to force a man to withdraw money from an ATM shortly after midnight on July 22.

It happened at the victim’s apartment complex in the 400 block of South Westmoreland Avenue, in Koreatown, officials say.

Earlier this week, police released security camera photos of the suspect to see if the public could help track him down.

The teen turned himself in to police around 7 p.m. Tuesday and was booked on suspicion of kidnapping, the LAPD report.

Officials say the suspect’s relatives saw the security camera photos on the news and recognized the teen.

Police say “family members encouraged the suspect to turn himself in, and accompanied him to the police station.”

The teen, whose name was not released, was held without bail at a juvenile detention center.
