US Open To Return To LA For 1st Time Since 1948

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The U.S. Open is coming back to Los Angeles.

Officials with the U.S. Golf Association confirmed Wednesday that the golf championship will be held at the Los Angeles Country Club in 2023.

It marks the first time any U.S. Open event will be held in L.A. since 1948, when it was held at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades.

"The city loves to host major events," club president John Chulick said. "This region, not having hosted the U.S. Open for so long, will be ecstatic about this."

The U.S. Open was held at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego in 2008, and it will return to that venue in 2021.

Mayor Eric Garcetti was among a number of L.A. officials to applaud the announcement.

"The United States Golf Association has made an excellent choice with the legendary Los Angeles Country Club," said Garcetti. "The U.S. Open is a proven winner, with a current economic impact of approximately $150 million, and L.A. looks forward to welcoming golfers and spectators from around the world."

The 2023 event will be the fourth USGA championship held at the Los Angeles Country Club, which hosted the 1930 U.S. Women's Amateur and the 1954 U.S. Junior Amateur. It will play host to the 2017 Walker Cup Match.
