1 Killed, 2 Injured In Shooting At South LA Birthday Party

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — One person was killed and two others injured at a birthday party in South Los Angeles Saturday night, authorities say.

Deputies were called around 11 p.m. to Berendo Avenue and West 111th Street, where KCAL9's Joy Benedict reports a birthday party for a woman in her 20s was underway.

Three male victims were discovered shot at the scene, a Los Angeles Sheriff's Department spokesperson said.

The suspect is outstanding.

Neighbors tell CBs2's Greg Mills they heard at least six shots ring out.

He also spoke to a man named Keith Garrett who identified himself as the party's caterer. He said he and two associates -- he identified as Trey and Corey -- were working their third event when he heard shots.

Trey, 26 and the father of two, was killed and Corey was wounded.

"The shots rang out of nowhere," said Garrett, "out of the clear blue. Right from over my head. It was like an ambush. Out of nowhere."

When he turned he saw his employee and longtime friend Trey had been hit and clearly in bad shape.

"He had multiple wounds to the head and body," Garrett said, shaking his head.

He said Corey has undergone surgery and Garrett spent most of Sunday at the hospital.

Garrett said neither he nor his employees have ever had any trouble with anyone. He believes the shooting was totally random.

The gunman apparently fled on foot down Berendo.

A neighbor said he saw the shooter.

"He was wearing a black hoodie and black pants," said Gilbert Caputo.

Authorities are looking for the suspect and ask that anyone with information regarding the incident call Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 222-TIPS. Callers may submit tips anonymously.
