Felon Accused Of Fatally Shooting Mentally Disabled Man Over His Shoes Makes First Court Appearance

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A man accused of fatally shooting a mentally disabled man in South Los Angeles, apparently over his red Converse tennis shoes, was ordered Friday to remain in jail on about $2 million bail.

Kanasho Johns, 28, was ordered to return to court for arraignment Monday on a murder charge in the May 29 shooting death of 19-year-old Tavin Price, who was shot by 11 a.m. May 29 near a car wash in the 3300 block of West Florence Avenue.

Johns – who was arrested June 23 outside Houston, Texas – is also charged with one count of possession of a firearm by a felon.

Kevin Deon Johnson, 24, and Dwight Kevin Smith, 30, previously pleaded not guilty in Price's killing and are also scheduled to return to court Monday to determine whether there is enough evidence to require them to stand trial.

A fourth person, Antheyst Jarrett, 27, was ordered June 18 to stand trial on one count each of dissuading a witness from testifying and being an accessory after the fact.

Price – who was called "Tevin" by some relatives and friends – was at the car wash with his mother and a friend when he went into a nearby smoke shop. Smith allegedly confronted him and asked whether he belonged to a gang because he was wearing a red shirt and red shoes, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

Prosecutors say Price said he didn't belong to a gang and ignored the question about his shoes. As he walked back toward his family's car, Johns allegedly ran across the street and shot him four times.
