Suspect Shot After Allegedly Attacking Officers With Skateboard In Mid-Wilshire Area

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Police Thursday were involved in an officer-involved shooting in the Mid-Wilshire area.

Shortly before 9 a.m., officers responded to the 800 block of Sycamore near 9th Street for report of a disturbance call, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Authorities said witnesses reported a man was smashing car and store windows with his orange and black skateboard in the area of La Brea Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard.

Upon their arrival, the suspect allegedly tried to flee the scene. Police said the man refused to stop and then attacked police with his skateboard, which subsequently led to an officer-involved shooting.

Moments before the shooting, an officer used a stun gun on the man before the suspect reportedly grabbed that Taser and  used it on the officer, burning the officer's leg

According to the Los Angeles City Fire Department, the suspect -- shot in the upper body -- was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

Police remained at the scene throughout the afternoon to continue their investigation.

A witness told CBS2's Jennifer Kastner the suspect appeared to be a homeless person.

"All I heard was a gunshot," said neighbor Rob Iiwanha, "I just saw a guy laying on the street in a puddle of blood."
