Fullerton Settles Voting Rights Violation Lawsuit

FULLERTON (AP) — The city of Fullerton has settled a lawsuit that alleged at-large elections deny Asian-Americans' voting rights.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California sued the city on behalf of Korean-American community representative Jonathan Paik in 2013.

The suit alleged that Fullerton violated the California Voting Rights Act by preventing Asian-Americans from electing candidates to the City Council.

The settlement announced Wednesday orders Fullerton to develop district-based elections to replace the current system where council members are elected by all city voters.

These elections would require each of the council members to live in the district they represent, and be elected by the district's residents.
