Federal Authorities Address Fourth Of July Terror Concerns In SoCal

PASADENA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Friday boosted security detail for the Fourth of July holiday weekend in response to terror concerns here in Southern California.

As the U.S. celebrates it's 239th birthday, law enforcement officials will remain on high alert.

According to the FBI, there is an increased threat for a terrorist attack in the L.A. area this weekend.

Independence Day falls in the middle of Ramadan -- an Islamic holy month for fasting -- which ISIS has identified as a time for it's followers to commit terrorist attacks.

Federal authorities explained it is more difficult to identify all of the potential threats as ISIS recruits home grown terrorists.

"If you think that there is something suspicious, we're asking for you to let us know," said Stephen Woolery of the FBI. "We'll take it from there."

Special teams will be assigned to airports, and investigators will watch potential suspects throughout the course of the weekend, authorities explained.
