Human Remains Discovered Inside Apartment Wall In Lomita

LOMITA (CBSLA.com) — Homicide Detectives Thursday investigated the discovery of human remains found inside of an apartment wall in Lomita.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, deputies were sent shortly before 1 a.m. to a residence located in the 26800 block of Western Avenue.

Sheriff's Lt. Steve Jauch said that a confidential source reported the possible remains to officials this week.

Jauch says scent dogs were dispatched and then coroner's investigators were called on Wednesday.

Sheriff's homicide and coroner's investigators returned to the scene Thursday to remove and identify the remains.

Officials say the family who lives in the apartment has been relocated. Detectives are trying to determine who lived in the apartment previously.

Family members of Raven Joy Campbell, 31, of Lomita, explained to CBS2's Kara Finnstrom that they received a call last week reporting Campbell's body was behind a wall in the apartment building.

Campbell was last seen leaving her apartment on June 4, 2009.

At the time, she lived in a group home prior to moving into the complex with a roommate.

Her sisters said they immediately expected foul play at the time of her disappearance, as she suffered from disabilities and would not have gone far voluntarily.

"She always wore her purse across her chest no matter what she had on," said Malikah Manasseh. "Her purse was lying there. She would not go anywhere without her purse."

According to deputies, it is too early to determine if crime is involved in the case.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department at (323) 267-4800.
