Transient Pleads Not Guilty To Fatally Stabbing AAA Tow Truck Driver

NORWALK (CBSLA.com) — A 39-year-old transient pleaded not guilty Tuesday in the fatal stabbing of a AAA tow truck driver who was helping his mother in Pico Rivera.

Tobias Ruben Cabrera is charged with murder in the June 2 stabbing death of Raymond Zabala, who was attacked in the 8400 block of Buhman Avenue while working on the woman's car.

Prosecutors say Cabrera walked up to the 35-year-old tow truck driver and asked what was going on before attacking him, then rode off on a bicycle. Zabala went to a neighboring home for help, but died near the crime scene.

Sheriff's deputies arrested Cabrera three days later. He is being held on $1 million bail.

Cabrera is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 4, when a date will be set for a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to require him to stand trial.

Cabrera faces up to 37 years to life in state prison if convicted as charged, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
