Dozens March In Los Feliz Where Unarmed Man Was Shot By Police

LOS FELIZ (CBSLA.com) — Activists and others marched in Los Feliz Saturday where an unarmed man was critically wounded in a shooting by Los Angeles police.

The officer-involved shooting happened on Los Feliz Boulevard and Tica Drive June 19 and left Walter William DeLeon, a father of two, in critical condition.

Dozens joined family members of DeLeon for the walk, which got underway at 6 p.m. at the William Mulholland Memorial Fountain on Los Feliz Boulevard.

Many had "Justice for Walter" signs calling for more witnesses to come forward and some held towels similar to the one DeLeon had.

"I see the news every day," Alicia DeLeon, DeLeon's mother, said. "But never imagined it would happen to me."

Marchers walked to the site of the shooting by 6:30 p.m. to mark the time he was shot in the head by one of two LAPD officers.

The East Los Angeles man remains in critical condition at a hospital.

According to the LAPD and backed by witness statements given to police, the officers were in their patrol car and saw DeLeon walking toward them. Police said DeLeon's arms were extended and his hands were clasped and covered by a gray cloth.

The officers believed he had a gun, but DeLeon was unarmed, police have said.

"Total shock. I mean, it's horrifying. I mean, and it seems that almost every other day there's somebody gets shot by a policeman who doesn't have a gun," Roland Binzer, a friend of DeLeon's, said.

Numerous investigations are underway and will be reviewed by the Chief of Police, the Office of the Inspector General, the Board of Police Commissioners, and the District Attorney's office.
