Man Fatally Shot In 99 Cents Only Store Parking Lot In Gardena

GARDENA (CBSLA.com)  —  A man was fatally shot in the parking lot of a 99 Cents Only store in Gardena on Friday afternoon.

The shooting occurred at the store on 135th Street and Crenshaw Boulevard just before around 1:30 p.m.

Police have identified the victim as Kody Cook, 18, of Gardena.

He was declared dead at the scene.

Authorities said they did not have a suspect but are checking surveillance video.

KCAL9's Rachel Kim said the victim was discovered in the driver's seat of a BMW.

Investigators canvassed the lot and surrounding area for clues.

"The victim was approached by the suspect or suspects on foot and engaged while he sat in his car and shots were fired into the car from the outside," says Lt. Russ Temple with the Gardena Police Department.

Police told Kim they had no motive for the attack.

"We don't know if he was alone for the entire incident," Temple said, "but he's the only victim at the scene."

The parking lot was filled with people at the time of the shooting.

Temple is asking any potential witnesses to come forward.

"We talked to a few," he said, "but we know there are more people who may have seen or heard something that we have not talked to and I encourage them to give us a call at the Gardena Police Department."
