Gunman Fires At Fullerton Police During Traffic Stop

FULLERTON (CBSLA.com) — Police have detained a man who they suspect fired at Fullerton officers during a traffic stop and fled.

Shortly before 2 a.m., police say they spotted an SUV, with four people inside, make a minor traffic violation.

The woman behind the wheel initially resisted a traffic stop but eventually pulled over at Williamson Avenue and Euclid Street, Fullerton police Sgt. Kathryn Hamel said.

As soon as the vehicle parked, an armed man exited from the passenger's side and began shooting at officers.

Police returned fire and the gunman took off running.

It does not appear the suspect was injured but that has not been confirmed.

Authorities set up a perimeter around the area and are questioning a man believed to match the shooter's description.

Officials have taken the driver into custody.

Hamel says there were unspecified drugs at the scene and one of the other men inside the SUV had a warrant out for his arrest.

Police temporarily closed the northbound lanes of Euclid between Valencia and Commonwealth. All lanes of Williamson were closed between Orange and Woods.

Motorists are advised to use alternate routes.
