Long Beach Officer Was Actually Shot By Partner During Standoff With Suspect

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Police in Long Beach now say an officer injured during a shootout with a suspect was actually shot by another officer.

The two responded to a call around 9 p.m. Sunday at an apartment complex on Artesia Boulevard near Paramount Boulevard, Long Beach police report.

The suspect at the scene reportedly began shooting as soon as the officers arrived.

The injured officer was hit as another returned fire. The officer is expected to recover.

The suspect -- now identified as 31-year-old Eric Arroyo of Long Beach --  was also injured.

On Wednesday, Arroyo was charged with four felony counts: two counts of attempted murder of a peace officer and two counts of assault with a firearm upon a peace officer.

According to the LA County District Attorney's Office, the felony complaint includes a special allegation that the defendant personally and intentionally discharged a firearm, which caused great bodily injury.

Arroyo's bail has been set at $3 million. He is expected to next return to court on June 19.

If convicted, Arroyo faces a maximum sentence of 80 years in state prison.
