Roof Collapses In 3-Alarm Blaze At Yorba Linda Home

YORBA LINDA (CBSLA.com) — Firefighters battled a three-alarm fire Wednesday at a Yorba Linda home where ammunition was heard going off inside.

The fire broke out at about 1:40 p.m. at a two-story home in the 17200 block of Chestnut Street, according to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi, and ignited ammunition that was stored in the home's garage.

"He reloads his own ammo, so he's got gunpowder, he's got primer in there, he had .38 rounds, .22 rounds, .357 rounds, plus shotgun rounds, so that's dangerous. Plus, there was some flammable liquids inside, so when this home was well involved, they were exploding. It's not like a projectile that gets shot out but it'll make an explosion that's loud, so we made a safety announcement to all the firefighters, 'be careful, stay at a safe distance,'" Concialdi said.

About 70 firefighters from the Orange County Fire Authority were on scene, Concialdi said.

The roof of the home where the fire originally started had caved in around 2:20 p.m.

The homeowner, who is in his 60s, was treated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation, and at least one other residence was threatened by the blaze.

There was no immediate word on how the fire started.
