Barricade Situation In La Puente Apartment Complex Ends After 12-Hour Stand-Off

LA PUENTE (CBSLA.com) — A barricade situation in La Puente that forced nearby residents out of their homes early Sunday morning has ended after a 12-hour stand-off.

Deputies responded around 1 a.m. to an apartment complex in the 900 block of Willow Avenue following a report of a male adult wanted for domestic assault.

Investigators say the man threatened to kill a woman and was uncooperative when they arrived to the scene.

The suspect was heavily intoxicated when deputies first made contact, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department. Deputies say the suspect was armed with a rifle inside the garage of the complex.

LASD's Special Enforcement Bureau (SEB) Special Weapons Team responded to assist Industry sheriff's station deputies around 3 a.m., eventually introducing gas into the residence.

The suspect reportedly was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound around 1 p.m.

He was later identified as 61-year-old Chien Yu, LASD Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez reports.

Surrounding homes were evacuated during the ordeal. Others were told to shelter in place. It was unclear how many residents were affected.

"We got home around 1:30 and they just said we couldn't get in because there was a gunman," neighbor Desirae Salinas said.

"It's a little frustrating," neighbor Christine Carranza added. "I mean, he's going to go to jail. He should just come out and that way everybody can get back to getting out and about."

Further information was not immediately available.
