New Gun Blamed For Rise In LA County Deputy Shootings
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The number of accidental shootings by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies has more than doubled in two years as the department switches to a new handgun.
The Los Angeles Times says there were 12 accidental firings in 2012 but 30 last year - most involving the new gun.
Last November, a deputy shot himself in the thigh while pulling his gun.
The Sheriff's Department inspector general is investigating the increase. Assistant Sheriff Todd Rogers attributes it to the learning curve for the Smith & Wesson M&P9.
The lightweight gun has an easier trigger pull than the old Beretta. It also lacks a safety lever.
About half of sworn personnel now use the Smith & Wesson. The department has imposed extra training requirements.
