Water Main Bursts In Westlake District

WESTLAKE DISTRICT (CBSLA.com) — Crews Tuesday worked to repair a water main that ruptured in the Westlake District.

According to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the pipe broke around 11 p.m. on Monday in the 100 block of Glendale Boulevard. Crews arrived at the scene around 3 a.m. this morning.

Officials said this is the same neighborhood where two separate 80-year-old pipes burst on Thursday.

Authorities said the pipe involved in today's incident burst several hundred feet down from the the same eight-inch water main affected in last week's incident.

According to LADWP officials, the area is known as a problem for aging pipes. Breaks and leaks are known to be cyclical, however, there is no way of predicting when incidents will occur.

Officials have designated a little more than $144 million for the pipe replacement program in the 2014/2015 fiscal year.

"It's enough money to cover the resources we have right now," said John Cox, DWP Utility Supervisor. "At some point in time, we are going to have to look at expanding the main lines that we replace every year. Our goal this year is 150,000 feet."

Crews expect more money will be needed to fund future pipe line replacements.

Water was shut off while crews worked to make repairs in the area.

It remains unclear how many residents were affected by the incident.
