Suspect Critically Wounded After Being Shot By Off-Duty Officer In Smart & Final Parking Lot

ONTARIO (CBSLA.com) — An off-duty Los Angeles County probation officer on Friday night shot a man who allegedly tried to carjack him at knife-point.

Ontario police say it happened around 9:40 p.m. in the parking lot of a Smart & Final, at Grove Avenue and Fourth Street.

Adrian Leatherman, 26, allegedly approached the officer and his wife as they were loading groceries into car and demanded they give him a ride.

The probation officer refused, prompting Leatherman to threaten them with a knife.

The officer drew his gun and ordered the suspect down on the ground.

Leatherman initially proved cooperative but then began to struggle with the officer, who fired a single shot into the suspect's upper torso.

The suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The officer and his wife were not injured.

Leatherman faces attempted carjacking charges.

Ontario police are investigating the incident and are asking anyone with information to call Detective Robert Marquez at (909) 395-2777. Information can also be reported anonymously by calling WE-TIP at (800) 78-CRIME or online at wetip.com.
