High School In Gang-Filled Neighborhood Boasts 100 Percent College Acceptance Rate

WATTS (CBSLA.com) — Verbum Dei High School in Watts boasts a 100 percent college acceptance rate for graduating students. What makes it even more remarkable is that the school is thriving in a tough, gang-plagued neighborhood.

Mary Beth Woods says that inspired her to help maintain the school's track record for academic excellence.

"My husband is an attorney, and the boys worked at the firm we worked at downtown," Woods said. "Once we saw the boys, met the boys, we were hooked."

So far, Woods and a team of donors have raised about $400,000 annually so that more students can attend the school.

"Between what they earn, and what their parents are able to give, there's a shortfall," said Woods. "So we have to help meet that shortfall so these boys can continue to do what they do."

While at Verbum Dei, the young men adhere to a strict business dress code to physically and mentally prepare for the work force. Students attend classes four days a week and work one day a week.

The school has helped students like class valedictorian Nicolas Bates further their career dreams by providing students with impressive resumes and the tools needed to succeed at top universities.

Bates explained he always had his mind set on being an engineer. He was accepted to Georgetown University.

"I came into high school with an agenda to do as best as I can," Bates said. "The trick is we get people into this school who wanna go on to the next level; who want to go onto collegiate endeavors."
