Domestic Violence Suspect Reportedly Fires On Police During Chase In Sylmar

SYLMAR (CBSLA.com)  —   Authorities said a domestic violence suspect fired on police during and at the end of a pursuit in Sylmar Sunday evening.

The chase and shooting occurred at Sayre Street and Bradley Avenue.

No officers were wounded in the shooting.

Police said they took the man into custody after using a stun gun on him.

Reporting from the scene, KCAL9's Jennifer Kastner said the suspect was identified as Jose Guzman, about 25 years of age.

The police also reportedly used a stun gun on the suspect's mother when she allegedly intervened in the arrest.

Both the suspect and his mother were taken to the hospital for wounds received from the stun gun.

Kastner reported that the incident started after LAPD received a call that Guzman was threatening his ex-girlfriend with a gun.

They said they located the suspect's car about a mile from her house and waited for him to enter the vehicle. They said he fled and a chase ensued.

Authorities said during the chase he fired "several" rounds at police.

Investigators canvassed the area looking for shell casings.

Police said Guzman also brandished a knife.

A captain commended the police for their actions.

"I would hate to think of what he would have done, had he had the opportunity to actually get near the victim of this crime, this incident," said LAPD Captain Todd Chamberlain. "What the officers did and how they did it, really averted a tragedy today."
