Truck Driver Honored For Helping Save Life Of LAPD Officer

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A humble truck driver got hero's welcome at Los Angeles City Hall Wednesday as he was honored for helping save the life of an LAPD officer.

Dorian Cole received a commendation by the Los Angeles City Council for using his big rig to protect an LAPD motor officer and another driver from oncoming traffic after they crashed into each other on the 5 Freeway in Sylmar on March 24.

"But if he hadn't jumped into action, put his big rig in the way, it could have been far worse than it was," Councilman Felipe Fuentes said.

Cole saw the officer on his motorcycle flip into the air and hit his head on the center divider.

In order to protect the officer, Cole positioned his truck with the cab in the carpool lane and at an angle across the next three lanes.

"The way the truck had everything blocked, nobody couldn't get past us," Cole said.

The officer who was injured in the crash remains hospitalized and will need a few more weeks of therapy. Cole says when he recovers, he hopes to have lunch with the officer.
