3 In Custody After High-Speed Pursuit Ends In Azusa

WEST COVINA (CBSLA.com) — Police have taken three suspects into custody following a high-speed pursuit that ended in Azusa Monday.

Police say the chase started in West Covina after a woman who was home alone saw two people in her backyard and called 911.

"Two guys standing, peeking into my window," the woman, who did not wish to be identified, told CBS2/KCAL9's Crystal Cruz.

Police arrived to the scene and ran plates for a late-model Pontiac Grand Prix in the area, learning the vehicle had been reported stolen. When officers attempted to stop the driver around 3:15 p.m. the suspect fled on surface streets.

SKY9 was overhead as the pursuit continued through Pomona, San Dimas and Claremont.

The suspect could be seen driving erratically, making sharp turns through residential neighborhoods, running stop signs and at one point cutting off a big-rig before driving through a front yard.

The suspect exited surface streets and was traveling westbound on the 210 Freeway in Glendora around 3:50 p.m.

The driver exited to surface streets in Azusa within minutes and crashed into a utility pole on Azusa Avenue just north of the 210. Three people exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

A female suspect walking casually down a residential street surrendered when approached by officers and was taken into custody around 3:55 p.m. A male suspect was later taken into custody, police said.

Officers surrounded a residence where the third suspect was believed to be hiding around 4 p.m. A K-9 unit was dispatched, the police dog locating the suspect inside a shed in the backyard of the residence. That suspect was taken into custody after a struggle with the K-9 around 4:15 p.m.

West Covina Police Chief Dave Faulkner tweeted CBS2/KCAL9, thanking the stations' air crew for their coverage, which helped to apprehend the suspect.

The three suspects are expected to face charges.

Their names were not immediately released.
