Woman Arrested For DUI Returns To Thank Fontana Officer For Saving Her Life

FONTANA (CBSLA.com) — A 36-year-old woman who was found driving under the influence of medication on New Years Eve returned to thank the officer who arrested her.

Mariya Fair was involved in a three vehicle collision on Dec. 31, 2014, on the corner of Sierra and Arrow avenues, according to the Fontana Police Department.

Officers explained Fair had gone through a severe bout of depression at the time, and was under the influence of pain medication and muscle relaxers for a back problem.

Upon arrival, Officer Wayne Blessinger suspected that Fair was under the influence, and asked her to step of the vehicle to take a breathalyzer.

The test confirmed she had not been drinking, however, Fair admitted to taking the pain medications earlier that day.

Blessinger subsequently detained Fair, and brought her to a holding cell where she waited for six hours until her husband picked her up.

According to Fair, the time she spent at the station allowed her to realize that she was addicted to pain medications. She claims the experience saved her life.

"It was a blessing that Officer Blessinger happened to be my officer that night," said Fair. "He was the first person who did an intervention, and cared to talk to me."

"One of the things he told me, 'You are so young - you need to take care of yourself and get your life back in order'," added Fair.

Following her arrest, Fair checked into a 90-day rehabilitation facility, which turned her life around.

On Monday, Fair went into the Fontana Police Department to thank Blessinger, whom she calls a blessing.

"This is the first time anyone has ever thanked me for arresting them," said Blessinger. "I am extremely touched to receive such gratitude."

Fair explained she was grateful to have been able to celebrate Mother's Day by being present for her two kids both emotionally and physically, all thanks to the help she received from Blessinger.
