Beverly Grove Water Main Break Is Another Sign Of Los Angeles' Aging Infrastructure

BEVERLY GROVE (CBSLA.com) — Nearly 20,000 gallons of water was lost Tuesday after a water main break in Beverly Grove, officials said.

The 6-inch pipe, which was installed in 1925, burst around 5:10 a.m. in the 8300 block of Blackburn Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

"First thing I saw was a big gush of water going down the street then my attention turned it this way and saw jet of water coming out high as the tree old faithful erupting crazy," resident Shaun O'Sullivan said.

It took LADWP about 45 minutes to shut off the water.

Residents at 40 buildings and homes between Orlando and Sweetzer avenues were without water until 9 a.m., according to the LADWP.

Blackburn Avenue was closed until 11:45 a.m.

Tuesday's water main break was the fourth break for the LADWP in just two day. Officials say they have an aggressive program underway to replace thousands of aging pipes each month.

"We have 7,000 miles of aging infrastructure," LADWP Superintendent Kirk Broyard said. "How do you fix all the pipes in Los Angeles? It's a massive undertaking."
