Caught On Video: Pursuit Suspect Keeps Driving Even After Being Hit With Spike Strip

COVINA (CBSLA.com) — Covina police released dash-cam video Monday from a patrol car, showing the pursuit and arrest of a DUI suspect who kept driving even after a spike strip flattened a tire.

Juan Hernandez, 33, of Azusa, was arrested after police used a PIT maneuver to spin out the car early Monday morning, Covina police Sgt. Gregg Peterson said.

Hernandez, who is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday, was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, evading police and other offenses, Peterson said.

The chase started after officers saw a car speeding without lights on. They tried to pull the driver over, but he kept going, leading the officers on a chase through Covina, Azusa, Irwindale, El Monte, Monrovia and Duarte, Peterson said.

"The suspect drove back into the city of Azusa, where Covina officers successfully deployed a spike strip," Peterson said. "The suspect vehicle continued driving on a flat tire, at which time Covina officers conducted a successful PIT maneuver and the suspect vehicle was disabled."

Hernandez was arrested without further incident, he said.
