Last-Minute Shoppers Flock To Flower Mall To Pick Up Bouquets For Mom

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com)  —   Last-minute shoppers flocked to the Flower Mall Saturday to pick up flowers for Mother's Day.

KCAL9's Cristy Fajardo reported from the frenzied location where doors will remain open until 7 p.m. Sunday.

She spoke to the many people who were undecided on roses, begonias, tulips, petunias or peonies.

"So we're coming for my aunt, my grandma, my other aunt, a bunch of people," said one shipper.

Whether the moms in your life are dog people, like long stems, or short stems, hydrangeas or orchids or petals whose names escape you, they're here even in uncommon colors, reported Fajardo.

That's why each Mother's Day, Israel Amador and others make a pilgrimage to the flower district in downtown LA.

They just have the best prices here and the best options around, you know," said Amador.

"It's been pretty cheap" said Jasmine Prieto. "It's very crowded and there's no parking but it's worth it."

The wholesalers offer great deals and very low prices -- the kinds moms would approve of.

Flowers are big business on Mother's Day even outselling Valentine's Day. One retailer told Fajardo for flower sellers, this is their Christmas.

Buen Gusto Flowers and other wholesalers at the California Flower Mall won't be closing any time soon -- they are hoping to cash in on the $2.4 billion Americans are expected to spend buying floral arrangements.

"Happy Mother's Day -- there's nobody else on the planet like mom," said Amador.
