Man Dead After Deputy-Involved Shooting, Crash In Cerritos

CERRITOS (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a man has died after a deputy-involved shooting and crash in Cerritos.

The incident unfolded just before 4:40 p.m. Thursday in the 17200 block of Pires Avenue.

As of 8 p.m., the body of the unidentified driver remained in a silver Chevy Impala that earlier struck a hydrant and knocked over a power pole in a crash.

Deputies said they responded after a call from a concerned homeowner who received a knock on her door from a woman the person didn't know.

When authorities arrived, they questioned the driver of the Impala, who they allege gunned the engine of the vehicle and drove toward a deputy.

At that point, authorities say, the deputy fired at least once. It was not immediately clear whether the man was struck by gunfire, however.

Moments after, residents say they witnessed the Impala travel down the street at a high rate of speed. Cellphone video showed the geyser that was created after the car struck a hydrant.

Authorities said the driver of the Impala was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies were questioning a woman who has not been classified as a suspect.
