2 Men Arrested In Irvine On Suspicion Of Stealing Copper Wire

IRVINE (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say two men have been arrested in Irvine in connection with the theft of copper wire on Saturday.

The suspects identified by the Irvine Police Department as Daniel Villanueva and Jose Rene Romeroocampo, both 35, were arrested on suspicion of grand theft, vandalism, and possession of burglary tools.

Police said an officer saw two men run across San Canyon Avenue while patrolling the area.

When the officer approached the pair, police said the officer "determined that they were carrying wire cutters, gloves, flashlights, a screwdriver, knifes, and other burglary tools," according to a written statement.

The Irvine Police Department said a subsequent search of the suspects' vehicle yielded "a 2-foot long piece of heavy-gauge copper wire and other burglary tools," according to the statement.

Police suspect that the wire they allege was found in the suspects' car was the same one that had been cut from a vault found open in the area, the statement said.

No further information was available.
