Explosions Heard Coming From Los Feliz House Fire

LOS FELIZ (CBSLA.com/AP) — As crews battled a two-story house fire in Los Feliz they reported hearing small explosions from within and later discovered a marijuana-growing operation inside.

Firefighters knocked down flames at a home in the 1400 block of Sanborn Avenue in less than 20 minutes, says Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The damage was mostly limited to a badly burned garage.

Scores of marijuana plants reported were found inside a drained pool on the property. There were also a significant amount of butane canisters left on the street.

Butane is often used to extract potent hash oil from marijuana plants.

The bomb squad was searching the house for unexploded canisters.

Sean Fernald, who lives across the street, says he heard a succession of loud pops when the fire was burning and first thought it was fireworks.

It wasn't immediately clear who was living in the house and there were no immediate reports of arrests.
