Study: Summer Is The Least Healthy Time For Children

PASADENA (CBSLA.com) — A new study released Thursday revealed that summer is the least healthy time for children.

According to the study put out by the YMCA and the American Academy of Pediatrics, kids are spending too much time sitting around during the summer months.

Researchers say children are not getting enough exercise and are not eating enough vegetables, which all contribute to weight gain and learning loss.

"70 percent of the parents understood that they need to do things differently and they look to help to make that happen, and the Y is the place where we can help fill those gaps," YMCA CEO Kevin Washington said.

To help keep families on track, the YMCA in Pasadena will host Healthy Kids Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The free event will offer families with free programs in Victory Park, including topics such as providing healthy lunches and learning, to avoid the so-called summer slide.
