Officers Arrest 19-Year-Old Santa Ana Man They Say Fired 5-6 Shots At Tustin Police

TUSTIN (CBSLA.com)  —   Authorities in Tustin have announced the arrest of a man they said fired 5-6 shots at police Friday evening.

Officials said just before 9 p.m. Friday, Tustin Police were patrolling Alliance Avenue.

A citizen contacted them and reported seeing a man brandishing a gun.

Officers said they heard 5-6 shots being fired in their direction.

The suspect -- later identified as Gary Figueroa, 19, of Santa Ana -- was seen fleeing through adjacent apartment buildings, on top of carports and over walls.

Minutes later, a woman ran from the Monterey Pines apartment complex in the 15400 block of Williams Street. She told police a man with a gun ran into her apartment and there were two people inside the apartment who did not manage to escape. A short time later, the two remaining residents were able to exit.

The suspect told the residents -- all strangers -- he needed a place to hide as he believed he had just killed a police officer.

Officers were able to identify Figueroa and began to secure the surrounding area.

The Tustin/Irvine SWAT team responded and began communicating with Figueroa. After hours of negotiations the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody. Figueroa's weapon was located inside the apartment and was found to be stolen from Westminster.

According to Tustin Police, Figueroa had minor self-inflicted cuts on his arms and was medically cleared for booking at Orange County Jail.

No bystanders, residents, or law enforcement officials were injured.

Figueroa was booked for attempt murder of a police officer(s), false imprisonment, and weapons violations. Police said the suspect is currently on probation and has a prior criminal history.
