Little Girl Nearly Killed By Big Tree In Whittier Is Home From Hospital

WHITTIER (CBSLA.com)   — A large tree that toppled in Whittier last month nearly killed two siblings.

One of the siblings, an 8-year-old girl, was just released from the hospital Friday evening.

While her brother James, 10, continues to recover at home, Andrea Castillo's mother spoke out to KCAL9's Crystal Cruz about her kids' ordeal.

Andrea  is stuck in a back brace and in a leg cast.

She suffered severe injuries three weeks ago when a 60-year-old tree fell on top of her and her brother in their front yard in Whittier.

"She only remembers us being out there bathing the dog," said Angela.

The little girl suffered a broken skull and had a minor stroke.

Cruz said Andrea is a little camera shy.

"My daughter right now, it's her recovery that will be the longest," her mother said. "Hopefully in four months, we will follow up with a neurologist to see if there is any permanent [damage] or any concerns that he has."

Angela says she complained to LA County about the tree long before it fell down. And the county confirmed to Cruz the tree was their responsibility.

"Personally, [I, neither] nor my husband," she said, "have heard from them. We have not heard from them."

The tree has since been removed. Other old trees along the street have also been removed.

Angela told Cruz the family was hosting a big block party this Saturday to thank first responders and neighbors who helped saved their lives.
