Man Who Reportedly Shot At Police Using Assault Rifle At Large In San Jacinto

SAN JACINTO (CBSLA.com)   —  Officials said they are actively hunting for a suspect who fired an assault rifle at police Saturday after they found the man driving a carjacked vehicle.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department supplied details about the incidents, which began around 9:15 p.m. Saturday.

Authorities said they were notified about a man who was seen brandishing a firearm at an undisclosed location.

When police arrived, they determined the man was driving a vehicle that had been reported carjacked.

When police tried to detain the man, they said he failed to stop or pull over.

During a chase near the 1200 block of De Anza Drive the suspect allegedly fired several rounds from a high-powered assault rifle at a deputy's patrol car. Thewindshield was shattered, injuring the officer, and the squad car was immobilized, a sheriff's department report said.

The man, described as Latino, drove away and crashed his car into a house two blocks away on Savory Road. He was able to run off into the
night and his whereabouts remain unknown.

A weapon -- believed to be the one the suspect reportedly used on the police -- was recovered from a backyard in a house near where he crashed the vehicle.
