Woman Found Dead In Angeles National Forest Last Month Identified
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A woman whose body was found a month ago in the Angeles National Forest was a Huntington Park resident, according to reports.
The body was discovered on March 3 in the area of Mount Baldy Road, near mile marker 1.96, according to the Sheriff's Information Bureau.
Authorities have identified the woman as 38-year-old Amparo Carina Velarde, sheriff's Sgt. Robert Gray told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.
Investigators believe Velarde was killed somewhere else, about seven to eight hours before the body was found, and her body was dumped in the forest, Gray said. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
A security hold has been placed on the case, preventing the coroner's office from releasing information about the death, said coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter.
There have been no arrests in the death, but an acquaintance of the woman is regarded as a "person of interest," Gray said. The man is in custody on an unrelated offense, according to the Tribune.
The woman's teenage son, who is not a suspect, last saw his mother at their home a couple of days before the body was found, Gray said.
