Highland Twin Boys Recount Residential Burglary While Home Alone

HIGHLAND (CBSLA.com) — Authorities said one person was apprehended and others remained at large in connection with a residential burglary at a Highland home.

Deputies responded to a call of a burglary in progress in the 7400 block of Palm Avenue just before 3 p.m. Monday.

Gretchen Hicks said she was on the phone with her kids when one of her sons told her the suspects were kicking on the front door. Miles away, she was helpless.

"They were just knocking on the door and so we looked through the peephole, but we didn't answer," one boy recalled.

Broedy and Tannar Hicks just turned 13 less than a month ago and had only seconds to act as the knocks on the door turned violent.

"I told her like, 'They're kicking in the door,' " another boy said.

But the quick-thinking twins hung up with mom, dialed 911 and ran to the back of the house.

"They went and hid in the garage that we have converted to a chicken coop, and so they hid with the chickens," Hicks said.

Deputies raced to the home within minutes and caught one of the suspects.

"They were incredible. They were here so fast," Hicks said.

Sheriff's investigators say it's possible two of the suspects escaped into the neighborhood and remain on the loose.
